Why spend money on bus rides, train tickets, and other public transportation fares if you can use a hoverboard? Apart from being a nifty mode of transportation, hoverboards can also be utilized for recreational activities such as a day out hiking or for fun at the park with family and friends.
As with many recent trends, many predicted that hoverboard is just a fad that will blow over the second a new viral toy comes around. I beg to disagree. It will stay relevant for another 10 years or more, depending on when the next mini transportation system technology advances. Hoverboard is more than just a fleeting trend.
What is a mini transportation system? This is a word I coined for electric bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller skates, and hoverboards. Most interestingly, the hoverboard is the smallest mini transportation system and this is an edge that helps it stay relevant. Those who dismiss the obvious pull of the hoverboard are the same ones who said the trend will die down. They are the type of users who use hoverboard merely as a leisure gadget. Hoverboards are more than that to middle-agers, librarian, airport ground staff, factory workers, and especially waitstaff (remember Rollerskates diners and drive-ins during the 50s until as recent as the 90s?), people who spend a lot of time on their feet in a workplace.
It all started from the idea brought forth by the cute and coy Marty McFly (played by actor Michael J. Fox) in his movie, “Back to the Future (Part II)”. In the movie, a hoverboard is depicted as a wheelless skateboard hovering a few inches off the ground. Since then, inventors have been trying to make the hoverboard a reality. However, since anti-gravity system is still in theories and research infancy, we still have to rely on wheels. Even so, with vast improvement in technological advances, there are numerous projects deriving from that single idea such as:
- Self-balancing two-wheeled
- Electric powered
- Motorized scooter
- App-based controller
- Disco light
- and many more
Even though it is not the exact replica of the hoverboard from ‘Back to the Future’ fame, the hoverboard still provides satisfaction to users as it is a significant improvement in a personal transportation system. The long battery life made traveling for up to dozens of kilometers possible on such a small motorized vehicle.
Self-balancing two-wheeled hoverboards rose to fame in 2015 when celebrities such as Wiz Khalifa, Justin Bieber, and Kendall Jenner began posting about it on their social media accounts. Shane Chen, a Chinese citizen residing in the United States was the first to design a hoverboard for commercial use. He posted his design on the pioneering crowdfunding site, Kickstarter on 2013. Since then, dozens of hoverboard brands flourished, most are manufactured in Shenzhen, China. The idea, design and electronic systems are largely from The States (for American brands). Each brand has their own design perks including longer battery life, powerful electric motor, delicate gyroscopic sensitivity, and sensor pad.
Self-balancing two-wheeled hoverboards will still be relevant in 2019 because of these factors; portability, dynamic size (it fits in a backpack), lightweight and money for value pricing.
These are the comparison between hoverboard and other mini transportation systems:
- Moderately big
- Moderately heavy
- Still a bit expensive
- Even though the handle is foldable, users still have to tote it around, making it an ungainly weight addition which defeats the purpose of a personal transportation system
- Mostly too fast – not suitable for middle-agers
- Long and it would not fit in a backpack
- Inconvenient, users have to carry it around with both hands
Self-balancing two-wheeled hoverboards:
- Fits backpack
- Perfect for all ages
- The speed is not too fast. It mimics a pedestrian walk (nobody wants to run 24hours in the city)
At the end of 2015, problems began plaguing the hoverboard. Fire and small explosions occurred mainly because of a design fault. Airlines began banning the hoverboard; it could not be stored in the cargo or even stowed in the overhead cabin as a carry on luggage. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched an investigation and concluded that Lithium-Ion batteries have a high probability to overheat, hence causing fires and minor explosions. However, in May 2016, Segway, Inc. received UL certification from China proceeded by the Swagtron brand, who then launched their own product. Several American brands followed closely afterward with their own UL certificates. There are still safety issues concerning hoverboards but with the certificate, you can worry less. It is safe to buy and use as long as the manufacturers comply with the rules and regulations in the guidebook. In this review, I will only highlight hoverboards with legit UL Certificate.
Top 10 Hoverboards (Review Updated 2018)
My selection criteria:
- Retails over $100. I didn’t want to include a cheap product because cheaper hoverboards are proven in using cheap materials and basic electronic systems making it easily damaged or broken, and my utmost concern is the battery quality.
- Less issues regarding usage and maintenance.
- Tire quality to measure grip strength.
- Distance reached per battery charge.
- Short period for recharging a battery pack.
- Analysis of real user’s feedbacks.
- Lightest or acceptable weight range.
- UL Certification acquisition.
- Less or no instantaneous combustion cases.
I spent 5 days, equivalent to 120 hours to research and collect data germane to my review of the “Best 10 Self Balancing Two-Wheeled Hoverboard” for you. I have pored over 2,000 comments from real users and I am not one who makes a sweeping statement bashing certain products. I keep it professional and when it comes to electronic devices, I am proud to say that I have the necessary expertise needed. Here, I have narrowed down 10 of the best UL certified hoverboard from 23 types of hoverboard available in the current market.

1. Halo Rover – Best Overall Hoverboard to Buy in 2019
Halo Rover, without a doubt, is the best overall hoverboard in this review. It is indestructible, built with the strongest frame, water resistant, and goes on all terrain. Marketing buzzwords that actually work, not just empty snake oil salesman promises. Are you trying to find a Bluetooth speaker package that is controllable using a mobile app? Halo Rover has it. Are you seeking a hoverboard with medium-sized wheels (8.5 inches) which is not too small (6.5 inches) or too big (10 inches)? Halo Rover has it. Fancy riding over wet sands at the beach, on grass, dirt, gravel, ascending hills with 20 degrees steepness, uneven terrain, without worrying over splashes from water puddles? All made possible by Halo Rover.
Among my favorite feature is the ability to sync the hoverboard with GPS and Google Maps on smartphones. You can record and replay your track. The mobile app also shows mileage, battery life, and location. It also includes 3 modes that you can set according to your preference; Training, Normal and Advanced.
From the safety angle, Halo Rover uses LG Firesafe battery with UL 2271 certification. It is equipped with a Ride-Assist Technology that keeps the hoverboard upright when powered on. Weight is not a problem because it can hold up to 260lbs (118kg)!

2. Mozzie – The Safest Hoverboard
Mozzie Hoverboard is also known as the ‘The Rolls-Royce of Hoverboard’ and ‘The Smartest Hoverboard’ or ‘Generation 2.0 Hoverboard’. What piques my interest about Mozzie Hoverboard is that it doesn’t have a center joiner between the two-foot pedals. Other hoverboards commonly have two separate pedals joined in the middle. This will lead to malfunctioning pedal cases, which basically means something is wrong with the joining mechanism between pedals and the shaft. Mozzie has a solid platform with one shaft, no joiner needed. This strengthens the body frame and improves stability. For those who use hoverboards regularly and are comfortable with pressing your heels or front pad of the foot to move around, you will not get the feeling with Mozzie Hoverboard. It is replaced with an amazing rubber pad that you will get used to, and in due time you will be a staunch believer of Mozzie’s platform design concept.
The hoverboard uses SafeEdge™ battery technology where it doesn’t use Lithium-Ion batteries usually found in other hoverboards. Instead, Mozzie uses a rechargeable non-combustible battery called Lithium Phosphate. The battery chemistry has a much lower flammability risk and doesn’t suffer from the thermal runaway effect of Lithium-Ion chemistries. This means that, no matter how overloaded it gets, it cannot burst into a self-sustaining fire that consumes everything around it. Hence, it is safer to use by riders of all ages. If you are looking to buy a hoverboard for your children or as a present to a young kid, this is the hoverboard for you.
I especially love the built-in handles feature. If you are a traveler, regular commuter, student and etcetera, built in handles lets you carry the hoverboard without having to carry a special bag. It helps that the weight is only 26 lbs (11.8kgs). Unlike other hoverboards which makes you think twice before picking it up – should you hold it with both hands, carry it over the shoulder or hug it with both hands like a precious baby? This won’t be a problem if you choose Mozzie.
TruRide™ stability functions as you place a foot on the pedal, indicator lights above the platform will light up blue. Blue means the hoverboard is calibrating or searching for your other foot while stabilizing as you have only placed one leg on it. It will not take-off while the light is still blue. The indicator lights will only turn green when both feet are on the platform.
I feel that Mozzie hoverboard is underrated due to lack of marketing and promotions. Maybe they prefer to rely solely on word of mouth because their product is one of the best compared to older brands in the market. So here I am preaching it, Mozzie Hoverboard is for the people who prioritize safety above everything else.
- Allegedly ‘The Smartest Hoverboard’
- Has the best stability system
- The safest because it does not use Lithium-Ion battery
- Has the best mobile app
- Very portable (has built-in handles)
- Best for street performers and concerned parents worrying over their children’s safety
- Warranty only lasts for 90 days
3. Hyper GOGO – The Most Powerful Motor
Hyper GOGO ranks third because of its solid and durable frame, and the strength of its motor. Suitable for all terrain riding with wide, 8.5 inches tall tires. From the comments I have read, Hyper GOGO hoverboard has no issues in usage and durability. In short, it meets a buyer’s expectations.
Like Mozzie, Hyper GOGO hoverboard lacks marketing and promotion by their manufacturer, making it less known even when its products are among the best in the market.
It has a Bluetooth speaker but it doesn’t have a mobile app. You can’t control it remotely and you can’t get data from the hoverboard. With an IP54 rating, it is safe from water and dirt. Hyper GOGO can carry weight up to 264lbs (120kg).
Among all the hoverboards I reviewed, this is the heaviest hoverboard weighing at 35lbs (16kgs). It is not advisable for a kid under 12 to carry it. The weight is not a problem for adults, and it shows that Hyper GOGO is built from high-quality materials.
With Hyper GOGO, you can travel as far as 9.3 miles (15km) on one charge. The charging period is quite fast, 2.5 hours (maximum) for a hoverboard this big and this powerful. You don’t have to wait long to resume your travel.
It has LED highlights and red blinkers at the rear for safety.
- Recognized as ‘Amazon’s Choice by Amazon, the biggest e-tailer in the world
- All-terrain 8.5 inches tires
- Powerful 400 watts dual motors
- Durable and strong frame with IP54 casing
- Holds up to 264lbs body weight (120kg)
- Bluetooth speaker
- Free hard-shell carry case included
- No mobile app
- Available in only one color (black)
4. Segway miniPRO – The Longest Range
Who doesn’t know Segway? In late 2002, it became a household name by producing the first self-balancing two-wheeled vehicle. Since then, Segway, Inc. kept introducing a plethora of two-wheeled-based products. Segway miniPRO is one of the products derived on the original Segway product. In 2015, Segway and Ninebot (a Chinese manufacturing giant) joined hands to collaborate on the R&D and production of personal transportation products, miniPRO is one of the results of their collaboration.
It’s a bit lightweight even though the tires are 10.5 inches in diameter. Among all the hoverboards I reviewed, Segway miniPRO has the longest range which is 14 miles (22.5km) and can go as fast as 10 mph (16km/h). The drawback is that it needs a long time to charge, which is up to 4 hours.
Regarding the speed, the hoverboard automatically limits the speed to less than 10mph when going downhill or if you’re going over the 10 mph (16km/h) in any situations. For users who want a hoverboard to display their skills doing stunts, this is not for you.
Its durable aluminum frame can support up to 220lbs (100kg) rider weight. To ride a miniPRO, the knee bar can be adjusted according to rider’s height. To pivot the hoverboard around its center, you only have to shift the knee bar either to the right or to the left. For new riders, miniPRO has a special tutorial mode. This hoverboard is suitable for users aged 16 and above.
MiniPRO has a Smart Battery Management System feature. It will report a real-time status of voltage, current, temperature, and usage as well as queries and tracking of the battery’s status and potential faults, which substantially reduces failures.
You don’t have to worry if your miniPRO splashes through a puddle or on dirt because it has a certified IP54 rating. On after sales service, the hoverboard’s mobile app has real-time updates for its software as well as delivering access to online services, community, troubleshooting tips and more. The app can be used to control miniPRO up to 50 feet away.
Anti-theft security is the best feature to date and is rarely found on other hoverboards in the market. Theft can easily occur because of the lightweightness of hoverboards. A thief can easily grab and run with it whenever a rider is negligent. With an anti-theft alarm, you can just lay it alongside you without needing to keep an eye on it.
- Aircraft Grade Magnesium Alloy Frame
- Powerful 400 watts dual motors
- Operational for 14 miles (22.5km)
- Easy to ride and maneuver
- Combination of Segway and Ninebot technology
- Easy Ride-Learning
- Advance app control
- 5 meters headlight brightness
- IPX4 water resistant
- The app can act as a remote controller for up to 50 feet.
- Long charging time
- Speed automatically capped at 10 mph
- No Bluetooth speaker
- The latest version is Segway miniPRO 260 instead of miniPRO 320 (smaller battery power)
5. Razor Hovertrax 2.0 – Best Hoverboard for Beginners
Razor is a well-known brand as they actively produced BMX, snowboard, motocross, skateboarding and surfing equipment. They have also produced their own hoverboard, Hovertrax. The 2.0 version is an upgraded version from version 1.0.
Hovertrax 2.0 has a speed up to 8 mph (12.9km/h). A user review stated that it can reach a total distance of up to 15 miles. I believe the actual distance is in the 6-12 miles (9.7-19.3km). Even though it looks small and suitable for kids, it can handle weight up to 220lbs (99.8kg). The motor power is 135 watts (cruising) and 350 watts (peak), quite powerful for a medium size hoverboard with 6.5 inches tires.
Forget about the mobile app and Bluetooth speaker. The Hovertrax 2.0 has neither. I assume this is maybe because of safety concerns. However, it does have LED light bars as entertainment during riding.
It is built with a shatter-resistant polymer frame with fender bumper protection. For riding stability, it is equipped with Gyro Sensor and EverBalance™ technology which helps balance your body for a smoother ride. Hovertrax 2.0 boasts full-length, anti-slip rubber traction platforms which keeps you in perfect balance for foot-controlled, seamless maneuvering.
- Charging period is only 1 hour
- Training and Normal Mode
- EverBalance® auto-self-balancing
- Ingenuity and craftsmanship
- The first US brand to receive the UL 2272 listing for safety
- No Bluetooth speaker
- No mobile app
6. EPIKGO Classic – Best Hoverboard for Off-Road Use
EPIKGO is another American company building and producing hoverboards. If you are a fan of all-terrain hoverboard like me, take note that this is my second choice right after Halo Rover. Upon deeper observation, both EPIKGO and Halo Rover have an almost identical design.
For your outdoor activities or off-road experience lovers, this hoverboard is a dream you need to make a reality. No need to worry about dents and mishaps, this hoverboard is as reliable as a tank. With 8.5 inches tires, combined with powerful 400 watts dual hub motors, smooth controls, IP56 rating which means it’s water resistant and splash proof, fast charging, farther distance, this is a must buy.
When you ride it, you will realize that it is comfortably rugged on all terrain and that you will feel stable as soon as you place your foot on it. The frame, made from a strong ABS body with aluminum fenders will reassure you of its all-terrain reliability.
With a powerful 400 watts dual hub motors, climbing up to 18 degrees is not a problem. It can reach a speed up to 10 mph (16km/h) and distance up to 12 miles (19.3km).
What amazes me is the fact that Epikgo hoverboard underwent 159 safety-related tests before it was even launched. It is UL 2272 compliant, reducing the fire hazard risk, and the battery is UL 2271 compliant.
- Rugged and all terrain
- Powerful 400 watts dual motors
- IP56 – water resistant and splash proof
- Price is higher than some other models but well worth it.
7. GOTRAX Hoverfly ECO – Best for Lightweight and Distance
The top speed is 7.4mph (11.9km/h) but don’t worry, that is only on paper. Realistically, it is very fast and can make you fall over if you are not careful. It can go as far as 12 miles (19.3km) and with fast charging technology, the battery pack can be fully recharged within 1.5 hours.
Gotrax has an advanced Learning Mode feature. That feature is very beneficial for kids because it makes riding safer. Switching between modes is made easy by pressing the power button twice, which can be found at the back of the hoverboard.
The front bumper is built with durable material which will not break in case of a collision. Along with nonslip footpad, this is among the advantages when descending a hill at 7.4mph.
Among all of the hoverboard I reviewed, this has the most color selection with Black, Blue, Galaxy, Green, Pink, Purple, and Red. There are also LED lights at the front for night time riding.
Unlike other hoverboard brands, Gotrax Hoverfly Eco is among the best because of the cheaper price. The speed goes up to 7.4mph and can go 12 miles per charge, best of all, the charging time is less than 1.5 hour. Even though Swagtron T1 can be charged in under an hour, but it is a bit pricier compared to Gotrax Hoverfly Eco.
Unfortunately, Gotrax Hoverfly Eco does not have Bluetooth speakers and mobile app. Younger users, kids, and teenagers especially prefer hoverboards equipped with Bluetooth speakers. I think the reason for not including the speakers is to make the manufacturing cost cheaper. It is also safer because fewer electronics (speakers) means less worry about wiring shortages or malfunction that can be triggered by water splashes.
- Traveling distance up to 12 miles (19.3km)
- Attractive pricing (below $200)
- Charging period is less than 1.5 hour
- Lightweight – 19.8lbs (9kg)
- 7 colors to choose from
- No mobile app
- No Bluetooth speaker
- 90 days only warranty
- Top body weight can’t go over 220lbs (100kg).
8. Swagtron T580 – Best Hoverboard for Kids and Family
Model T580 is the latest model from Swagtron. The features are between the T1 and the T6 model. It is not the best hoverboard in the market, but it is packaged with amazing features including Bluetooth speaker and mobile app, which is not available on the T1 model.
Even though it only has 150 watts dual motors powers, what intrigues me is that it can climb up to 30 degrees. Maximum speed is 7.5mph (12km/h) and maximum distance is 8 miles (11.3km). The spec sounds very basic, right? That’s why I chose T580 as the most suitable hoverboard for families, kids, and teenagers. This type of users won’t need a high speed or longer distance hoverboard because they use it mainly to bond together and for recreation. One major selling point for younger users is that the built is lightweight; it is only 20lbs (9kg), light enough to be carried around.
Younger users also love hoverboards equipped with Bluetooth speaker, mobile app and also LED headlights. Swagtron T580 has all that. Absolutely perfect for young millennial who are carefree and love to showcase their skills in front of their family and friends.
What else for the young ones? Learning Mode and Advance Mode! This is very important for younger users as some hoverboards don’t have these. T580 will teach users on how to get on a hoverboard for the first time. Both modes are assisted with a backend feature called Dynamic Equilibrium Technology. It helps stabilizes the hoverboard so it will be balanced with the user’s body.
From the safety aspect, Swagtron T580 has equipped with SentryShield® and Smart Battery Management technology. It offers additional multi-layered protection, including from over-voltage and extreme spikes in battery temperature.
- Perfect for family, kids, and teenagers
- Bluetooth speakers
- Mobile app
- Smooth ride
- Climbing capacity up to 30 degrees
- Solid construction
- Weighing at 20lbs (9kg)
- 150 watts dual motors
- Low range
- Low max speed
9. Gyroor Warrior – Best Hoverboard in Terms of Features
With a weight of 30.8lbs (14kg), it is not the lightest hoverboard in the market. However, it can speed up to 9.95mph (16km/h) and going the distance of 7.5-9.5 miles (12-15.3km). One of my favorite criteria when choosing a hoverboard is their climbing capability and Gyroor Warrior can maneuver 30 degrees steepness.
For those of you with 7-year-old children, this is perfect as it is the minimum age stated by the manufacturer. It is built 90% from an aluminum board with some ABS parts, strong and flexible, especially for all terrain. The 8.5 inches tires made Gyroor Warrior look tougher, echoing its name, ‘Warrior’. For those weighing around 265lbs (120kg), it won’t be an issue since Gyroor Warrior can handle that weight without any problem.
The battery will be fully charged in 2 hours. In my opinion, 1 until 2 hours charging period are the best range for a hoverboard. Unlike Segway miniPRO which takes 4 hours to charge, Gyroor Warrior saves more time.
I love the app provided. The Gyroor Warrior mobile app functions as a self-balancing switch. It can also be used to change the LED colors, flip over adult or child mode, Anti-theft alarm, adjust riding speed, play music by Bluetooth, check riding track, and etc. Younger users will love it as it has Bluetooth speakers. However, I received reports where the Bluetooth kept getting disconnected. I hope the manufacturer can update their app and Bluetooth connection to ensure the glitch does not happen again.
Safety wise, it has an anti-theft sensor. Only two hoverboards have this feature, Segway miniPRO, and Gyroor Warrior. This feature is sadly missing in other hoverboards. Gyroor has also acquired UL 2272 certification on overall safety and UL 2271 for its battery. This hoverboard can manage all types of terrain. However, Gyroor Warrior has an only IP54 rating, which means a little water splash is fine but riding near the coastline or splashing a bucket of water on it, is a no no. It will definitely mess with the hoverboard’s electronic system.
- Suitable for all ages
- Very strong and durable body
- Can hold up to 265lbs (120kg) of body weight
- Powerful 350 watts dual motors
- Fast charging (less than 2 hours)
- Speed 9.95mph (16km/h) and distance range 7.5-9.5 miles (12-15.3km)
- Lightweight – 30.8lbs (14kg)
- Climbing capability – 30 degrees
- Very good mobile app
- Anti-theft feature
- Bluetooth speakers
- Minimal usage instructions
10. Swagtron T6 – The Best Hoverboard for Heavyweight
Swagtron T6 is at the 10th place but it’s not the worst, it still has its perks and I still like it. Believe it or not, this is the only hoverboard that can carry up to 420lbs (109.5kg)!! Almost double the top weight that other hoverboards carry, which averages around 220lbs. Segway miniPRO with 10.5 inches tires couldn’t even compete. With this weight capacity, I believe Swagtron T6 has a very strong and durable frame. With 10 inches tires, Swagtron T6 has smaller tires compared to the miniPRO.
With 300 watts dual motors power, it can move at 12mph (19.3km/h) and go as far as 12 miles (19.3km) per charge. Even though the motor power is less than other off-road terrain hoverboards (350 watts and above), it can still climb a hilly terrain up to 30 degrees of steepness. If you like off-road terrain you will love Swagtron T6. It has an IPX4 rating (protects from splashing water, no matter the direction).
Why do I like Swagtron T6 apart from the other notable features above? One of the reasons is because of the carrying handle. This is one of the most useful features in case the battery goes dead. The handle makes carrying 44lbs (20kg) bearable. The second reason is because of the mobile app. The app can manage and control functions such as battery level, speed, distance traveled, riding modes, and more. For teenagers, they will love the Bluetooth speakers, as they can ride and listen to upbeat songs at the same time!
From the safety angle, (apart from UL 2272 and UL 2271 certification), there is a feature called SentryShield® Lithium-Ion battery which protects the battery from fire hazards. The platform has non-slip pedals so your feet will stay steady while riding, assisted by Dual Foot Guards on left and right side of the platform. For nighttime riding, Bright LED Motion Indicator Lights will be your savior.
- Great for off-road terrain
- Rugged construction that supports up to 420lbs (190.5kg)
- Range up to 12 miles (19.3km)
- Speed up to 12mph (19.3km/h)
- Powerful 300 watts dual motors
- Mobile App
- Bluetooth speakers
- Carrying handle

Best Self Balancing Scooters & Hoverboards – Buying Guide 2019
If you want assurance, I suggest you purchase the best hoverboard from top American brands like Segway, Swagtron, Gotrax, Halo, Mozzie, Razor and others. China produces a lot of cheaper hoverboards but there is no guarantee of safety. China hoverboards has neither warranty nor UL 2272 certification whether they are legit or fake.
1. Build Quality
It can be said that most hoverboards in the current market has more or less the same specifications. The differences are in warranty period, durability and build quality. Almost all top American brands uses best materials such as indestructible aluminum fender, durable ABS body chassis, solid rubber all-terrain tires, aircraft grade magnesium alloy frame and more. Unlike China brands who tend to use cheap plastic material which can damage or loosens easily, which can be a horror. Top American brands also use the best tested motor. The battery is also safe as it complies with UL 2271 certification.
2. UL 2272 Compliant
Please ensure that you choose a UL 2272 compliant hoverboard. A brand may claim it is UL 2271 compliant (for battery). Even so, having UL 2271 doesn’t mean they have also acquired UL 2272 which refers to compliance for the entirety of the hoverboard. Be careful.
3. Speed and Range
Hoverboard is not built for long distance travels. Most has the range of 8 until 14 miles (11.3-22.5km). It is made to ease shorter commute within a small area for example, it is used or regular commuting to and from work until 4 miles (one way). It is also commonly used for leisure activities inside recreational parks, or as a mode of transport inside big buildings like shopping malls, factories and other similar places where the radius is not too wide.
A hoverboard is also not built for speed, unlike bicycles and motorcycles. It is built to imitate the pace of a pedestrian. Moreover, if the speed is too high, it will endanger the rider as the hoverboard control depends only on two feet, unlike bicycles and motorcycles that is controlled by both arms and legs.
4. Wheel Size
Choose 6.5 inches tires if you are buying one for family or younger users. For all-terrain and off-road fans, 8.5 inches tires are sufficient. If you like a higher gap between yourself and the ground, the 10 inches is suitable for you. Regardless of sizing, make sure the wheels are wide because it will be more stable and easier to control.
5. Climbing Capability
There are hoverboards brands claiming they can climb steep hills up to 30 degrees, but you must remember this is only on paper. Combined with your body weight, the climbing capability will be reduced. An easy way to figure out is to take half from the steepness indicated in the specification. For example,30 degrees will become 15 degrees. This will prepare you from being disappointed if your chosen hoverboard is incapable to manage 30 degrees steepness.
6. Maximum & Minimum Weight
Minimum weight averages around 44lbs (20kg) and 220lbs (99.8kg). If you ride it while wearing a backpack, play safe and choose a hoverboard that can carry up to 265lbs (120kg).
7. Hoverboard Weight and Portability
A hoverboard normally weighs around 18.9lbs (8.57kg) to 30.8lbs (14kg). I suggest lighter hoverboard for family and young riders use. For teenagers and adults, select ones that don’t weight more than 32lbs (14.5kg). There are some hoverboard brands that gives free carry bags to facilitate portability.
8. Battery Life and Charging Times
On average, a hoverboard battery pack can power up to 2 hours long. It depends on the range (how far), speed (how fast) and weight of the rider. I recommend choosing a hoverboard that can be charged for less than 2.5 hours. If it needs to be charged longer than that, it means that the quality of the battery used is low. Don’t forget to check both the charger and the battery to ensure that it has been UL tested.
9. Mobile App, Bluetooth Speakers, GPS and more
With a built-in GPS system that connects to your smartphone, you can find out your current location and trackback your activity for the day. Bluetooth speakers are an added value as most riders like to showcase their skills alongside catchy music. Not all hoverboard has a mobile app. Some doesn’t even have a mobile app nor Bluetooth speakers. Just make sure you get a hoverboard with both front and rear lights for obvious safety reasons.
My selection criteria in choosing a hoverboard for review refers to hoverboards that are priced over $100. After reviewing, I realized that the ones priced above $150 are a better pick based on their quality and warranty. The cheaper ones use cheap, low-quality material including the battery. This is a major safety concern. Cheap hoverboard parts tend to detach, damage, break easily and many more. It simply is not worth the price. Truthfully, I recommend a hoverboard within the $400-$800 range if you want quality and great after sales service.
